Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men and women combined in the US and is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates about 141,210 people will be diagnosed in 2011 and that 49,380 will die from colorectal cancer in the US.
On average, the lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer is about one in 20 (5.1%), however, this varies widely according to individual risk factors.

About Michael Shannon
|
At 46 years old, Michael Shannon is the picture of health. Born and raised in Pasadena, Maryland, a resident of Glendale, California; now lives and works for the Walt Disney Company in Hong Kong with his wife Jennifer. A non-smoker, athletic, fun-loving; Michael went to the doctor complaining of hemorrhoid symptoms. To everyone's utter surprise, he was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer that has already spread to his liver and lungs. He was and still is without symptoms, making the diagnosis and prognosis all the more shocking. He is entering clinical trials at University of Southern California with oncologist Dr. Anthony El-Khoueiry to identify the chemotherapy treatment that will best improve his prognosis. Treatment will be delivered in Hong Kong. Surgery will take place at University of Southern California directed by oncologist Dr. Anthony El-Khoueiry
Michael’s medical insurance in the United States is not-available and any savings he has will be used up shortly in expensive treatments and travel. Michael will be one of many that Caring Communities hopes to assist. |
